VIPA Advises Public of Anticipated Record-Busy Holiday Season

The Virgin Islands Port Authority is advising the public that this upcoming holiday season is anticipated to be the busiest travel season in history. “The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and several airlines have reported that they expect a record number of travelers for the upcoming holidays. We are also expecting a noted increase in travel at the Cyril E. King and Henry E. Rohlsen Airports, as well as via our ferry ports in the U.S. Virgin Islands,” said VIPA Executive Director Carlton Dowe.

Airports

Dowe advised travelers to arrive at least three hours before their flight’s scheduled departure time to allow adequate time for pre-clearance screenings. He reminded people traveling via the Cyril E. King Airport (CEKA) that parking is still temporarily prohibited at CEKA as VIPA completes the construction of its new, multi-level parking and transportation center. Travelers are advised to make arrangements to be dropped off or picked up if traveling via CEKA. Alternatively, free public parking is available adjacent to the former Island Beachcomber Hotel.

Parking is available at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix. However, Dowe reminded the public that parking along the curb at airport terminals is not allowed. Vehicles parked at the curb will be ticketed or towed.

Seaports

Passenger and car ferry ports will operate as normal during the holiday season. Dowe asks travelers to please adhere to all instructions provided by VIPA’s marine employees and contracted security personnel at the Authority’s seaport. Since travel is expected to increase, he advised travelers to plan accordingly and arrive at least 20 minutes to a half hour before departure times to avoid long lines.

Dowe also asks travelers to adhere to all parking signs posted at the territory’s airports and seaports as parking restrictions will be enforced. “On behalf of the Virgin Islands Port Authority, I wish everyone safe travels and a happy holiday season,” said Dowe.
