CEKA Runway Reopens After Temporary Closure for Emergency Repair

The Cyril E. King Airport (STT) in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands was closed for an emergency asphalt repair at 3:20 p.m. today. Departing and arriving flights were temporarily delayed until the runway reopened at 5:00 p.m.

Virgin Islands Port Authority Executive Director Carlton Dowe stated that the Authority is aware of areas of failing asphalt on the airport's runway and has taken steps to begin a major rehabilitation project. VIPA hosted a pre-bid meeting on June 21, 2024, with local and national engineering firms interested in bidding on the project. VIPA is working with local and federal stakeholders to initiate the project at the earliest possibility.

It is important to note that CEKA only has one runway. The airport is one of the busiest in the Caribbean, with over 1.4 million people traveling through it annually.
